Do you have a talent, or something you are good at?

Honestly, I think I’m quite talentless, but I’ve been told my singing is very good and that I can pick up a tune in just a minute or so, but I’m not sure if they’re just being nice. I do think though that my English pronunciation is pretty good and that my Chinese writing is also quite elegant.

Do you think your talent can be useful for your future work?

For the singing part, absolutely not, but for English, yes. In fact, I’m currently working and my English skill plays an essential part in my work. I often collaborate with overseas colleagues on projects, and there are no obstacles in our communication, either in verbal or written form. And somehow, I’ve become much faster in understanding English in difficult accents, like Indian-accented English.

Do you think anyone in your family has the same talent?

Yes. My younger sister has a knack for languages. For her, it’s ‘talent’, literally. For instance, she was able to speak some basic Japanese just by watching Japanese animations that she’s into. She knows the lines and she can sing the theme songs. Other than that, she has no problem understanding and speaking Cantonese because she lived here for a number of years, but even after a few years here, I still don’t, so I think she’s actually gifted in learning languages.

Was it mastered recently or when you were young?

For the two skills I mentioned just now, I wouldn’t call them my ‘talent’. I started practicing hard-pen Chinese calligraphy at a young age, probably 4 years old, and this process lasted for a few years. And for English, I didn’t make a concerted effort to learn until I was 17, but the effort certainly paid off, for I gained a high score in English in the college entrance examination and now I’m using it in my daily work, but I wouldn’t say any of my skills or talents have been ‘mastered’.
